Project Mathematics Mastery: Elevating Grade 7 Numeracy Skills
Phase 1: Operations on Whole Numbers – Addition and Subtraction
Last November 17, 2023, the College of Teacher Education conducted their Phase 1 extension project at Amungan National High School, where four sections of Grade 7 students (136 students) were taught about Operations on Whole Numbers – Addition and Subtraction. There were four extensionists: Leroy A. Flores, Gelin Angela Dizon, Hicel Mae Mas, and Mildred Temporosa. The said phase 1 extension was designed to give students the knowledge and abilities they needed to be proficient in solving problems involving whole numbers using addition and subtraction operations.
All the instructional materials used, such as window cards, test questions, and flashcards, were prepared by the CTE faculty extensionists and in collaboration with the Future Mathematics Teachers’ Organization (FMTO). The figures below show the preparation of the extensionists before the conduct of the Phase 1 project.
The four extensionists simultaneously conducted the tutoring program for the four sections of Grade 7 students with 2 hours allotted time given by the school principal. Several activities have been conducted to ensure their active participation and meet the expected outcome of the said project. All students actively participated and showed interest in all the topics that have been discussed.
Assessments and feedback sessions were conducted to measure the students’ progress and identify areas that required additional attention. Based on the result of the assessment of the 136 students, most of them have increased their knowledge with regard to solving addition and subtraction of whole numbers. In addition, most of the class performed well in their speed and power tests. However, most of them have struggled to solve problems with limited allotted time in subtraction of whole numbers. After the 2-hour session, all 136 Grade 7 students, six (6) mathematics teachers’ counterparts, and four (4) extensionists received food and drinks for their snacks.
In conclusion, the Phase 1 Extension Project at Amungan National High School emerged as a commendable effort to enhance the mathematical skills of 136 Grade 7 students. Through strategic planning, dynamic teaching methods, and continuous assessment, the project achieved its objectives and set the stage for future phases to enrich the student’s educational experience further. The CTE extensionists’ commitment and the students’ enthusiasm combined to create a positive and impactful learning journey, leaving an indelible mark on the academic landscape of Amungan National High School.
